Track & Field FAQs

How do coaches decide which events athletes will participate in?

Coaches will decide which events athletes will participate in based off of their personal strengths, what they’ve been working on in practice, their practice attendance, as well as the athletes opinions.

Coaches will not force an athlete to do an event, but they will have a discussion if they think an athlete is good/should participate in an event that the athlete does not want to do.

Will my athlete go to all the events?

The coaches will decide who participates in each meet. Invitational meets are usually the top 3-4 athletes in each particular event, which can change from week to week throughout practices. However, Dual meets are for all students to participate in, as long as they are in good standing with the coaches.

However, your athlete should be attending all practices unless discussed with a coach prior to them not being there.

What is the difference between a dual meet and invitational meet?

A Dual meet is for every athlete to participate in. These usually take place in the middle of the week against one to two other schools.

An Invitational meet is for the top 3-4 athletes from each event. These usually take place on Fridays and Saturdays, and they usually involve 20+ schools participating.

How can an athlete earn a Varsity letter?

To be considered for a letter, a team member must finish the season in good standing with the team and coaches.

Team members can earn a letter in Track & Field in any ONE of the following ways:

    1. Participate in at least 50% of varsity races (2023 = 4 Invitational Meets)

    2. If a Senior has put in three consecutive years with the team and has demonstrated a great attitude and work ethic

    3. Coaches also reserve the right to manage lettering qualifications based on the greater good of the overall team

What equipment is needed to participate in the program?

Proper footwear should be worn during practice and meets to prevent injury! Running shoes are a must!! If you would like to get Track Spikes or Throwing Shoes as well, ask your current coach for their recommendations.

However, Track and Field is a physically demanding sport as well! Proper nutrition and hydration is extremely important in preparing for races and practice. Athletes must make sure to get enough sleep to allow the body to recover. Athletes must inform the coaches of any pain or injuries. Communication is key!
